Fire Prevention Week kicks off this Sunday, Oct. 4, 2020, and Kingston Fire & Rescue (KFR), in partnership with KFLA Fire Rescue, will be serving up daily fire safety tips, according to a release from KFR, dated Friday, Oct. 2, 2020.

The tips will be released daily through videos filmed in the kitchens of local restaurants, and if you can guess the kitchen’s location and you have a chance to win a $250 gift card to dine out at one of these great restaurants!

“Cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries in Canada,” says Delbert Blakney, Fire Inspector with KFR and Chair of the KFLA Fire Rescue Fire Prevention Committee.

KFR says these fires are 100 per cent preventable by following a few simple steps. “We can’t help you become a better cook, but we can help you be safer in the kitchen,” says Blakney.

According to the release, until Saturday, Oct. 10, 2020, KFR and nine neighbouring fire departments in the Frontenac, Lennox and Addington region will shine a spotlight on fire safety in the kitchen, while supporting local restaurants and the United Way, and provide you with a chance to win your next meal out.

Guess the fire-safe restaurant for a ballot to win.

Starting Sunday, Oct. 4, residents who visit the KFR or KFLA Fire Rescue Facebook pages will find a daily video that has been filmed at a local mystery restaurant and includes a fire safety tip.

How to participate:

  • Watch the video.
  • Email [email protected] with the fire safety tip shown in the video and your guess for where it was filmed.
  • You will be entered into a draw at the end of week. The lucky winner will receive a $250 gift card to one of the participating local eateries.
  • Increase your chances of winning: Participate each day of the contest and you could have up to 10 ballots entered for a chance to win.

Win another ballot: Support local food programs through the United Way

KFR recognizes that not every member of the community has a kitchen, or the groceries needed to prepare a meal. As part of Fire Prevention Week this year, they are inviting all residents who are able to consider donating to the United Way of KFL&A. United Way agencies distribute 3,500 food hampers monthly and an average of 1,670 meals per day to people in the community, KFR said in the release.

“During Fire Prevention Week, let’s not only consider our own safety — let’s give back to those who need it most,” says Blakney.

Your name will be counted in the draw to win a $250 gift card to one of 10 restaurants located in the KFL&A region.
