Fire on Day Street displaces 16 residents

Kingston Fire & Rescue (KFR) were called to Day Street this morning after reports of smoke inside a multi-unit residential building.

Units arrived at the 100 block of Day Street at 8:50 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 17, 2023, and firefighters observed smoke and tenants outside the building, according to a statement from KFR.

The fire was quickly brought under control and no injuries were reported. According to KFR, two cats and one dog were saved, but, unfortunately, one cat perished in the fire.

Victim Services and the Red Cross are currently assisting the 16 displaced tenants. A Kingston Transit bus was brought to the site to temporarily shelter the displaced individuals until more permanent shelter was secured.

KFR reported that the damage is estimated at $300,000 and Fire Prevention is investigating to determine the cause of fire.
