REOPENED: Fatal multi-transport collision closes Highway 401 westbound

Update 2 (Thursday, Oct. 14, 2021):

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have now identified the two drives who were located deceased at the scene of the multi-vehicle collision that took place on Highway 401 near Gardiners Road just after 1 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2021.

According to the OPP, the deceased have been identified as Oliver Czuppon, 41, of Mississauga, Ont. and Charles Martin, 61, of Saint Valerien, Que.

The investigation into this collision remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the South Frontenac Detachment of the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

Update (Thursday, Oct. 14, 2021):

After a multi-transport collision closed the westbound lanes of Highway 401 near Gardiners Road in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2021, the highway has reopened.

At approximately 2 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 14, 2021, more than 24 hours after the incident occurred, the roadway reopened to traffic. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would still like to hear from anyone with information about this incident. Contact the South Frontenac OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

In the early morning hours of Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2021, a multi-transport collision closed the westbound lanes of Highway 401 near Gardiners Road.

Shortly after 1 a.m., members from the South Frontenac, Sharbot Lake and Lennox and Addington Detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Kingston Fire department and Frontenac Paramedics responded to the collision. According to a report from OPP, the initial investigation indicated an eastbound transport truck crossed over the centre median and entered the westbound lanes, colliding with several other transport trucks.

Two drivers were pronounced deceased at the scene. OPP said names are being withheld until family members can be notified. Another driver was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

South Frontenac OPP, with the assistance of an OPP Technical Collision Investigation (TCI) team, continue to investigate the cause of the collision, according to the release. Highway 401 westbound from Gardiners Road to County Road 6 has been closed to all traffic and rerouted to the emergency detour route.
