Fatal collision closes 401 near Kingston

The Ontario Provincial Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding a fatal collision on Highway 401 near Kingston during the early and foggy morning of Sunday, Jun. 25, 2023.

At around 3:45 a.m., emergency responders were dispatched to reports of a collision between a transport and a passenger vehicle in the eastbound lanes of the 401 between Highway 15 and Joyceville Road.

There were five occupants in the passenger vehicle. One was pronounced deceased, while the other four were treated on scene and transported to hospital with varying degrees of injuries.

The identity of the deceased has not been released, pending notification of next-of-kin.

The eastbound lanes of the 401 remained closed between Highway 15 and Joyceville Road until about 2 p.m. on Sunday as OPP officers continued their collision reconstruction investigation.

OPP confirmed that heavy fog at the time of the collision was being investigated as a contributing factor in the collision.

It is not known at this time whether any charges will be laid as a result of the collision.
