Falling concrete at Hanson Memorial Garage ‘non-urgent’: City of Kingston

The City of Kingston is aware of falling concrete at its Hanson Memorial Garage and has deemed the issue to be a “non-urgent” matter, the City said following a report of large ceiling chunks falling onto a vehicle in the garage on Friday, Jun. 23, 2023.
“The area where the concrete had fallen in The Hanson Memorial Garage has been reviewed by one of the City’s engineers,” the City replied following inquiries by the Kingstonist.
“The concrete that fell was a thin surface layer that deboned from the ceiling surface of the slab. This is typical deterioration found in concrete structures and does not represent an urgent structural concern,” the City stated.

According to City staff, a structural maintenance project is due to begin in early 2024 that will repair this and other areas in similar condition. “In the meantime,” the City said, “to mitigate the risk of further hazard from falling debris, we will have our staff review the ceiling and remove loose concrete surface where found.”
