#ygkChallenge: Remember the Prison Farms

Prison Farms, Kingston, Ontario
Welcome to Kingstonist’s weekly challenge, dare, resolution or whatever you prefer to call it. Each week we establish a new and ambitious community goal, encouraging our readers, followers, friends and families to step out of their comfort zones and do something great, and hopefully a little out of the ordinary. Consider this your official and personal invitation to join us in completing a small but meaningful achievement. By taking part in this community-wide initiative, we hope to make Kingston a slightly better place to live, work and play. And of course, we also hope that you will feel proud of your contribution and achievement.

This week’s challenge encourages you to:

Remember the Prison Farms. Although the long battle to save the Prison Farms at Frontenac and Pittsburgh Institutions was lost, the injustice levied by our federal government has yet to be forgotten.  Ted Hsu, MP for Kingston and the Islands, recently released his own calculations regarding the operating expenses associated with our local farms, which suggest that Frontenac’s agricultural program may have been profitable.  Hsu went on to say: “I stand with my constituents here in Kingston and the Islands who share our belief in programs that build stronger and safer communities, not larger multi-billion-dollar prisons.”  The Save Our Prison Farms campaign will be hosting a special vigil tonight at 7pm at the the Bath Road entrance to the Frontenac Institution to remember and draw attention to the closure of the prison farms.  Come out and show your support.  Otherwise, you can help by keeping the closure our prison farms on the minds of those around you.

Sign up and commit to completing this week’s challenge by commenting below with an “I’m in“, “challenge accepted“, “en garde” or something along those lines. Further, help us spread the word via Twitter and Facebook by sharing the link and encouraging the participation of your friends and family. By joining together in our weekly challenge, we hope to accomplish big and positive things for our community.

Thanks to Laura Carter for today’s photo.

  • I just wanted to let you know that the time given here for tonight's vigil isn't correct. The vigil will be held from 7-8pm at the front entrance to Frontenac Institution at Bath Rd. and Centennial Dr. Please join us! The vigils are fun and energizing. We always get a hearteningly positive response from the people driving, biking and walking by.
