#ygkChallenge: Plan and Plant Your Garden

Plant your garden, indoor garden, start from seedWelcome to Kingstonist’s weekly challenge, dare, resolution or whatever you prefer to call it. Each week we establish a new and ambitious community goal, encouraging our readers, followers, friends and families to step out of their comfort zones and do something great, and hopefully a little out of the ordinary. Consider this your official and personal invitation to join us in completing a small but meaningful achievement. By taking part in this community-wide initiative, we hope to make Kingston a slightly better place to live, work and play. And of course, we also hope that you will feel proud of your contribution and achievement.

This week’s challenge encourages you to:

Plan and plant your garden! Considering the blanket of icy snow that’s currently clinging to the ground, it’s rather difficult to imagine the warmth of Spring, the familiar song of birds and earth giving way to new life. Believe it or not, Spring is fast approaching, as this Sunday we’ll be springing forward with the end of Daylight Savings Time (DST). Even though we will be losing an hour of sleep, what better time to look ahead to warmer days by planning and planting your backyard, balcony,  windowsill or ultimate garden.  Around this time last year, Danielle and I started nearly 100 vegetables and herbs off from seed in the well-lit windows around our house.  While not every sprout made the successful transition into the ground, our backyard garden boasted a record yield last year, producing nearly 6 dozen delicious fruit and vegetable plants. In fact, we’re still enjoying the extra Portugal peppers and jalapeños that we stashed away in the freezer.  Considering estimates from the National Gardening Association that gardening can save as much as $500 in food costs per year, requiring a measly investment in seed packets and TLC, what do you have to lose? Grab some inspiration, and get planning and planting your best garden now, so it will be ready to transplant come the May-long weekend!.

Sign up and commit to completing this week’s challenge by commenting below with an “I’m in“, “challenge accepted“, “en garde” or something along those lines. Further, help us spread the word via Twitter and Facebook by sharing the link and encouraging the participation of your friends and family. By joining together in our weekly challenge, we hope to accomplish big and positive things for our community.
