Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement regarding the expected change in precipitation on the afternoon of Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2019.

The statement, issued at 10:28 a.m., concerns the Kingston-Odessa-Frontenac Islands area, as well as the Napanee-Consecon and Picton-Sandbanks Park areas, and indicates that snow will change to rain this afternoon.

“A Colorado low will track northeast across Lake Huron and Georgian Bay today, bringing a dramatic change in weather with it,” the statement reads.

Snow will change over to rain or a mix of rain and wet snow in the afternoon, with possibilities for freezing rain during the changeover. Total snowfall amounts are expected to range from 2-5 cm near Lake Ontario to 10-15 cm over areas further northwest towards Georgian Bay.

“Poor winter driving conditions are expected,” Environment Canada said.

A brief thaw will begin later today with temperatures rising just above the freezing mark, and colder air will return tonight.

Please exercise caution when driving, both in the city and on the highways.
