Environment Canada forecasts ‘significant winter storm’ for Saturday

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Kingston and the area, forecasting a “significant winter storm” for Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020.
The statement is in effect for the Kingston, Odessa, Frontenac Islands, Napanee, Consecon, Picton, and Sandbanks Park areas and warns of significant rainfall amounts expected for areas north of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.
“A low pressure system will impact southern Ontario this weekend. Rain, freezing rain, and snow are all possible with this system,” the national weather agency said on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2020.
“Freezing rain is expected to affect most areas from east of Lake Huron to eastern Ontario. Significant ice accretion or build up is possible. Snow will affect areas east of Georgian Bay with significant snowfall amounts.”
Environment Canada said that travel is likely to be impacted by this storm, however, it is uncertain which areas will be the most impacted with this system.
Kingstonist will continue to monitor this situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
