Driver charged after striking Picton War Memorial
An Ottawa driver has been charged with careless driving after striking a monument in Picton over the weekend.
According to a release from the Prince Edward County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023, officers received a report of the collision on Main Street near Ferguson and Chapel Streets in Picton.
OPP officers responded alongside Hastings Quinte Paramedic Services and Prince Edward County Fire and Rescue, to the vehicle which struck a monument.
The monument, which was not identified by police, is the Picton War Memorial, originally erected in 1920 in memory of those lost in the First World War, which was rededicated in the 1950s to honour those lost during the Second World War, as well. The federal government contributed funds to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 78 (Picton) in 2007 to “restore and conserve” the monument.
Police did not note any damage to the structure.
As a result of the collision, a 29-year-old driver from Ottawa was charged with careless driving, according to the OPP
