One deceased, dozens injured in 401 bus crash
A 54-year-old man from China has died and 4 others remain in critical condition following a bus crash on the 401 on June 4, 2018.
A Code Orange was declared at Kingston General Hospital and several other regional hospitals shortly after a tour bus crash occurred at around 2:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon on Highway 401 westbound near Prescott, west of Blue Church Rd.
Several dozen occupants sustained injuries when the Union Tour Express bus crashed into a ditch, striking a rock-cut. OPP immediately confirmed that at least four of the travellers, which were members of a tourist group visiting from China, had sustained life-threatening injuries. Brockville and Ottawa area hospitals also prepared for an influx of patients. John Pereira, Public Relations Officer for Kingston Health Sciences Centre, said that KGH was well prepared to respond and did not expect that any resources would have to be diverted from other departments nor patients transferred to other sites. The Code Orange was lifted at around 7 p.m. and the hospital returned to normal operations at that time.
The cause of the crash is not yet known. Highway 401 was closed until about 10:30 p.m. for an investigation.
The Canadian Red Cross is coordinating information for families whose loved ones were involved in the incident today near Prescott. They may call the Central Registration and Inquiry Bureau number at 1-855-797-8875.
More to come.
