A 54-year-old is facing a list of serious charges after the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated a hit and run with a pedestrian – and a narrow escape for another pedestrian – in Deseronto.

According to police, at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 10, 2023, the Lennox and Addington (L&A) County Detachment of the OPP received a report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle on Prince Street in Deseronto. One person was struck and sustained serious injuries, while another was able to move out of the vehicle’s path, the OPP said in a press release on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2023.

The vehicle involved fled the scene, but officers located the vehicle and its driver, according to the OPP. The ensuing investigation led to the arrest of that driver, who has been charged by the L&A OPP with attempting to commit murder, among other substantial charges.

As a result of the investigation, 54-year-old Daniel Craley of Deseronto was charged with:

  • Two counts of attempting to commit murder
  • Two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • Two counts of assault with a weapon
  • Failure to stop after an accident
  • Criminal harassment – threatening conduct

Craley was held by police to attend a bail hearing, and subsequently remanded into custody. Craley is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Greater Napanee at a later date, the OPP said, though police did not release the exact court date.

Kingstonist has inquired with the L&A OPP as to whether the victims and the suspect are known to one another. This article will be updated if/when more information becomes available.

Update (Friday, Aug. 18, 2023, at 9:35 a.m.):
The victims in the case of a hit and run involving one pedestrian and a narrow escape for another and the person accused of attempting to commit murder as a result are known to one another, according to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

The victims — one of whom was struck by a vehicle on Prince Street in Deseronto on Thurday, Aug. 10, 2023, while the other was able to jump out of the path of that vehicle — and the person who was driving the vehicle in question (who has been identified as 54-year-old Daniel Craley of Deseronto) had previous connections, police clarified in response to inquries from Kingstonist.

Constable David Yome, Media Relations Officer for the Lennox and Addington (L&A) County Detachment of the OPP, confirmed this infomation in an email to Kingstonist late in the day on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2023. Yome was not able to say when Craley will appear in court on the eight charges filed in the matter, which include two counts of attempting to commit murder.

Kingstonist will continue to monitor this situation and provide updated coverage as more information becomes available.
