This week, the Correctional Service Canada (CSC) has shared details on two separate seizures of contraband and unauthorized items at Joyceville Institution. These are the ninth and tenth reported seizures at the east-end correctional facility so far this year.

The first incident this week took place on Sunday, Feb. 25, 2024, and was the result of a suspected drone drop, the CSC reported four days later.

The items seized included cannabis and drug paraphernalia, and had an approximate institutional value of $120,300, according to the national correctional authority.

The second incident occurred on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024, and in that incidence, tobacco was the only item seized. However, CSC reported this package had an institutional value of approximately $14,000, and was also the result of a suspected drone drop.

“The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) uses a number of tools to prevent drugs from entering its institutions. These tools include ion scanners and detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates, and visitors,” the federal organization said.

The CSC cited the “vigilance of staff members” for locating the contraband in both cases.

“CSC has heightened measures to prevent contraband and unauthorized items from entering its institutions in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone. CSC also works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband or unauthorized items into correctional institutions.”

The federal correctional authority has a telephone tip line to receive information about activities relating to security at CSC institutions, including activities related to drug use or trafficking that “may threaten the safety and security of visitors, inmates, and staff members” working at federal prisons, CSC said, noting that information shared on the tip line is protected and callers can remain anonymous. The tip line can be reached at 1-866-780-3784.

Prior to these two occurrences, the last report of contraband and/or unauthorized items being seized at Joyceville Institution occurred on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2024.
