The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) has seized packages containing contraband and unauthorized items at Joyceville Institution in Kingston’s northeast end.

According to a release from the federal correctional agency, the packages were seized over Easter weekend, and were located as a result of “the vigilance of staff members.” CSC noted that the packages were the result of a suspected drone drop.

The items seized between Saturday, Mar. 31 and Sunday, Apr. 1, 2024, included tobacco, cannabis, hashish, shatter (cannabis concentrate), as well as drug paraphernalia. According to the release, the total estimated institutional value of the seizure is $223,900. (Institutional value refers to what the items are worth if sold within the federal prison system.)

This is the 13th seizure of this nature at Joyceville Institution the CSC has announced since the beginning of 2024. Kingstonist spoke with CSC about the increase in drone drops and the seizure of contraband/unauthorized items at Kingston area federal prisons this year in mid-March.

“The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) has heightened measures to prevent contraband and unauthorized items from entering its institutions in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone,” the federal agency said.

“CSC also works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband or unauthorized items into correctional institutions.”

CSC has a telephone tip line set up to receive information about activities relating to security at CSC institutions, such as drug use or trafficking, which “may threaten the safety and security of visitors, inmates, and staff members working at CSC institutions.” Anyone with information about the safety and security of a federal prison can call 1-866-780-3784, which is a secure, toll-free line, and those who provide information can remain anonymous, according to CSC.
