An inmate at the Regional Treatment Centre of Millhaven Institution has died while in custody, according to the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC).

In a press release on Friday, Feb. 9, 2024, CSC reported that 60-year-old Robert Ratcliffe died on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2024. At the time of his death, Ratcliffe had been serving a sentence of two years and two months for “sexual offences,” which commenced on March 29, 2023, the national correctional authority said.

“The inmate’s next of kin have been notified,” CSC  reported.

Ratcliffe’s cause of death is not known at this time.

“At this time, further information regarding the cause of death is not available and will be determined by the Coroner,” said Kerry Gatien, a Media Relations and Outreach Advisor for CSC, in an email.

As in all cases involving an inmate death, CSC will review the circumstances, the federal agency relayed. CSC policy requires that Office of the Coroner be notified upon the death of an inmate.
