An inmate from the Regional Treatment Centre at Millhaven Institution has died while in the custody of Correctional Service Canada (CSC).

The inmate passed away on Thursday, Apr. 21, 2022, following a serious assault. CSC confirmed that this death is one and the same as the inmate death referred to in an OPP release earlier today in which the suspect has been charged with first degree murder.

The CSC cannot share the individual’s name in order to comply with a court-ordered publication ban, according to a media release dated Friday, Apr. 22, 2022.

According to the CSC, at the time of death, the inmate was 70 years old, and had been serving a sentence of 4 years for sexual assault, sexual exploitation, and sexual interference with a person under 14 years old, since April 20, 2021. His next of kin have been notified.

“The Joint Forces Penitentiary Squad and CSC are currently investigating the incident,” the release reads. “CSC takes the death of an inmate very seriously. At this time, no further information is available while the investigation is underway.”
