A 72-year-old inmate at Bath Institution had died, according to a release from the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC).

CSC said that Wayne Lockhart died on Tuesday, Mar. 26, 2024, while in custody. At the time of death, Lockhart had been serving an indeterminate sentence, which began on May 30, 1974, for kidnapping, break and enter, forcible confinement, assault, and causing bodily harm.

The inmate’s next of kin have been notified, the national correctional agency stated.

“At this time, further information regarding the cause of death is not available. A quality of care review will be conducted to examine the facts surrounding the offender’s death, and the cause of death will be determined by the Coroner,” shared Mike Shrider, Regional Communications Manager for CSC.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, CSC will review the circumstances, the agency said, noting that CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.
