CSC report inmate death at Regional Treatment Centre

An inmate at Millhaven Institution’s Regional Treatment Centre has died while in the custody of the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC).
According to CSC, Douglas Lagossy died of apparent natural causes on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2023. At the time of his death, Lagossy, 66, had been serving an indeterminate sentence, which began on March 11, 1981, for assault and sexual assault with a weapon.
Lagossy’s next of kin have been notified.
In a media release dated Friday, Sept. 15, 2023, CSC stated that, as in all cases involving the death of an inmate, they will review the circumstances. CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.
Only 22 years old when he started serving time. Died at 66 while still incarcerated. How tragic all round.
How many young men knew that he was in Millhaven ? (rhetorical question). In the absence of anything other than general awareness that this was a serious crime, how is that a deterrent ? What was the cost of keeping him in prison for forty years. Was that cost effective ? Were any attempts made to ‘rehabilitate him ?
