The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) has reported that an inmate was assaulted at Millhaven Institution, located just west of Kingston.

On Thursday, May 30, 2024, an inmate was the victim of an assault at the maximum security institution.

“The injured inmate was evaluated by staff members and transported to an outside hospital to receive treatment,” the CSC stated. “No staff members or other inmates were injured during this incident.”

According to a release from the CSC, dated Wednesday, Jun. 5, 2024, the assailant has been identified and the appropriate actions have been taken. The Ontario Provincial Police and the institution are currently investigating the incident, CSC detailed.

“The safety and security of institutions, their staff, and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system,” the CSC said. “In order to improve practices aimed at preventing this type of incident, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances of the incident and take the appropriate measures.”

In response to Kingstonist inquiries, CSC said that the assailant involved in the assault was another offender at the institution. The agency would not disclose whether a weapon was involved in the incident.

“Due to the ongoing investigation, other details regarding the assault are unavailable at this time,” Mike Shrider, Regional Communications Manager for the CSC told Kingstonist in an email.
