Correctional Centre resumes normal operations after shooting

Normal operations have resumed at the Henry Traill Correctional Centre on the Collins Bay Institution property after a shooting took place in the area last week.
The shooting, which occurred just before noon on Friday, Mar. 24, 2023, took place after a vehicle carrying multiple individuals stopped on the roadway, and one or more people opened fire from the vehicle, with at least one individual exiting the vehicle. The suspects fled the scene in the vehicle — a grey Honda Civic, according to police — which was last seen travelling northbound on Centennial Drive from Bath Road. Bath road remained closed to traffic for several hours on Friday as police carried out their on-scene portion of the investigation.
According to the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC), visits have resumed at the penitentiary, and the Correctional Centre has resumed its normal operation.
CSC would not say if something had occurred in the investigation to lead to the reopening, deferring to Kingston Police to speak about the investigation.
“Unfortunately, we are still unable to share particular details of this case due to the ongoing investigation,” said Michael Shrider, Regional Communications Manager for CSC, in response to Kingstonist inquiries.
“CSC has been collaborating with police partners as they investigate the incident; it was eventually determined that there was no longer an immediate and imminent threat to offenders, staff, or the public in the area, meaning that we could proceed with visits for the offenders,” Shrider continued.
“Ensuring the safety and security of its institutions, staff, inmates and the public is a priority for CSC.”
Kingstonist has followed up with Kingston Police regarding whether any arrests have been made and requesting an update on the ongoing investigation. Kingston Police did not immediately respond to these inquiries. Kingstonist will continue to follow up on this investigation and provide further coverage as more information becomes available.
