An inmate at the Regional Treatment Centre of Millhaven Institution has died while in custody, according to the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC).

In a press release on Friday, Apr. 12, 2024, CSC reported that 70-year-old Gary Nishikawara died on Thursday, Apr. 11, 2024. At the time of his death, Nishikawara had been serving an indeterminate sentence for second degree murder, the national correctional authority said.

Nishikawara was convicted in October 2023, having been found guilty of stabbing his 95-year-old mother in her Toronto home.

“The inmate’s next of kin have been notified,” CSC  reported, noting that “at this time, further information regarding the cause of death is not available.”

As in all cases involving an inmate death, CSC will review the circumstances, the federal agency relayed. CSC policy requires that the Office of the Coroner be notified upon the death of an inmate.
