Contraband and unauthorized items with a combined estimated $115,000 institutional value have been seized from the medium security yard at Collins Bay Institution.

According to a press release from Correctional Service Canada (CSC), “several packages” containing the contraband and unauthorized items were seized at approximately 9: 30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 26, 2018. The seized items included three cell phones, chargers, SIM cards, ear pieces, eight packages of cigarettes, and 1.12 kilograms of marijuana.

Police have been notified and the institution is investigating, CSC said.

CSC is strengthening measures to prevent contraband items entering institutions, and also works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband into a correctional facility. CSC also introduced a complete smoking ban in federal correctional institutions in 2008.

CSC would like to remind the public that there is a telephone tip line for all federal institutions to receive any information about activities related to security at its institutions, including activities related to drug use or trafficking that may threaten the safety and security of visitors, inmates, and staff members working at CSC institutions. That toll-free number is 1-866-780-3784, and all callers can remain anonymous.
