City urges students to keep move out ‘smooth, neat and safe’

The post-secondary school year is winding down, and the City of Kingston has shared some steps for those moving out of the community over the next few weeks that will help them move out safely.
“Students: Congratulations on finishing your academic year. If you’re moving, make sure you have a plan to make your move smooth, neat and safe,” the City said in a release dated Thursday, Apr. 13, 2023.
Here are a few steps the City suggests those moving out should be sure to take:
- Close your Utilities Kingston account. A minimum of five business days are necessary to ensure the account is closed on the date requested. You can do this online at https://utilitieskingston.com/Accounts/OpenClose/Moving or by phone at 613-546-0000. (Hydro One electricity customers can call 1-800-434-1235. Enbridge customers can call 1-888-774-3111).
- Dispose of any unwanted items properly. Not sure where it goes? Use the City’s Waste Lookup tool. Purchase additional bag tags at your local retailer. For hazardous materials such as batteries, cleaners and aerosols, visit the Household Hazardous Waste Depot at 196 Lappan’s Lane.
- Take advantage of Giveaway Day! On Saturday, April 22, put unwanted reusable items curbside – your neighbours may be interested and together you’ll be diverting waste from landfills.
- Drop excess and oversized items off at paid disposal sites. These locations charge a fee for waste disposal. Items brought to them end up in landfill.
- Waste Management: 62 St Remy Pl, 613-549-7401. Open Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. At the City’s request, Waste Management will have extended hours on April 29 and 30 to help with student move out. This facility will be open Saturday, Apr. 29 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Apr. 30 from 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
- Waste Connections of Canada: 1266 McAdoo’s Lane, 613-548-4428. Please call ahead for hours of operation.
- Be a good neighbour! Be mindful of the property standards and solid waste bylaws and leave your property clean. The Yard and Streets and Property Standards bylaws require yards to be free of any garbage or debris. There will be bylaw officers enforcing these laws so plan ahead.
