City of Kingston, KFL&A Public Health provide lists of warm-up locations

Winter weather continues to hit the City of Kingston and surrounding areas. After a particularly snowy winter storm during the Christmas season, and with what feels like weekly weather statements coming from Environment Canada, Kingstonist inquired with both the City of Kingston and KFL&A Public Health about a list of local warm-up locations in the region in mid-December 2022.

The following information was provided by the City in mid-January, 2023:

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, the City and Kingston Frontenac Public Library have partnered to provide Warm Up Here locations to the community,” the City said. “These sites provide a place for users to warm up while maintaining physical distance.”

‘Warm Up Here’ locations can be found throughout the city, and are locations where users can step in for immediate relief from the cold. The City said that additional services typical to these sites may not be available.

The City suggests users are encouraged to call ahead to ensure there is capacity at the nearest location and note that public holidays will affect hours of service. For more on dealing with extreme weather, visit the City’s website.

In addition to the above locations, KFL&A Public Health provided the following warm-up locations:

“Extreme weather locations are public and private spaces within the KFL&A area where you are welcome to come in and seek shelter during extreme weather events,” Public Health stated. “Please call ahead to confirm hours of operation and if there is capacity.”

The City of Kingston also provided a link to their list of local shelters and drop-in services. View it here.

  • Not everyone who needs the warm-up centres has a telephone. Therefore, what happens to them as they are not able to call ahead as the City suggests?
