Charges laid after Kingston Police find man with prohibited weapons

Kingston Police responding to a call for assistance at a downtown apartment building opened up a whole new case when a male was located in possession of prohibited weapons by happenstance.
At approximately 10:47 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2021, Kingston Police were called to 381 Bagot Street, an apartment building operated by Kingston Frontenac Housing Corporation, for a disturbance. While investigating the matter, police encountered a male in the hallway of the building who was carrying a black canister. Upon further inspection, it was determined that the man was carrying pepper spray/bear spray, said Const. Ash Gutheinz, Media Relations Officer for Kingston Police.
When Police requested the man’s identification, he provided them with false identification. He was subsequently arrested and, upon being searched, the man was found to also be in possession of a conductive energy weapon, commonly known as a taser.
When the man finally provided his identity, police determined that he had a warrant for his arrest out of the Niagara Falls region.
As a result, the 41-year-old man from Hamilton was charged with:
- Obstructing a peace officer
- Two counts of possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace
- Possession of a prohibited device while prohibited
- Unlicenced person in possession of a prohibited weapon
- Breach of probation
The male was transported to Kingston Police Headquarters and held to attend a bail hearing the following day. Kingston Police have indicated they will be releasing more information on this incident later today. Kingstonist will update this article as more information becomes available
