A taste of nostalgia can be had Saturday, Sept. 5, 2020, at Pisanos: Old School in Kingston’s west end. The restaurant pays homage to old school recipes with a modern twist, with fare that mainly focuses on Philly Cheesesteaks, gourmet hamburgers, hotdogs, poutines, and classic deep-dish pizzas.

Pisanos: Old School is celebrating the last long weekend of summer with a CarHop Bonanza! Phone in your order, and when you swing by to pick it up you’ll be served, in your car, by skaters from the Kingston Roller Derby.

This event is a throwback to the days of drive-up restaurants, and is a great way to stay safe and have fun at the same time. The CarHop Bonanza! will take place in the parking lot of Frontenac Secondary School, 1789 Bath Road, next door to Pisanos: Old School. They will be following all COVID-19 protocols and are asking customers to stay in their vehicles.

K-Rock 105.7 will be providing tunes and signage will help customers go with the flow. Tips and gratuities will be accepted on behalf of Loving Hands Kingston, as thanks for the amazing work they continue to do in our community.

Kingstonist spoke with Pisanos earlier this year, about the challenges of opening a new business during the pandemic. Take a look at our coverage and learn a little more about Pisanos: Old School.

Details about the CarHop Bonanza! can be found on their Facebook Event page.

We reached out for some more details from Pisanos:

How did this concept come together?

Due to the Pandemic, we were unable to have a Grand Opening, or an event at the shop. We looked for a way that we could safely host an event that would bring people together, but still adhere to social distancing measures and protocols, while encapsulating the vibe of our restaurant and give back to charity.

And so members of Kingston Roller Derby will be wheeling Pisanos orders out to customers at their vehicles, right?

Yes! We are taking it back to a 70s old school vibe! Rollerskating servers would CarHop at drive-in diners, and we wanted to give people a real dose of nostalgia!

Talk about “old school”! Is that why the concept made so much sense for Pisanos?

In our shop, you’ll see classic movie posters, pop culture props, arcade games. Our owner, Noele Murano, has mad old school love, and we thought bringing the rollerskaters in for an event was a real throwback! And by involving Kingston Roller Derby, we’re lending the spotlight to one of our local organizations. It just blended together!

And how did Loving Hands Kingston become involved?

Noele is very keen on supporting local, and giving back where he is able. Through Gino’s Pizza and Spaghetti House, Noele has given his heart to a variety of charitable causes, including donating food and monetary gifts. When we were designing this event, we asked Kingston Roller Derby who they would like to see supported, and they selected Loving Hands Kingston; a charity we’re very proud to help.

Tell us about that organization? What do they do?

Loving Hands really and truly “fills the gap”. They are an organization that are committed to helping our vulnerable sector in this community. From shelters, to donating meals to our most needy, they are a committed group of people who continue to give back to those who need it most here in Kingston.

What can people expect from the experience tomorrow?

Tomorrow, expect a unique, one-of-a-kind individual experience. Between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., you can call our shop and place your order. You will be assigned a number. When you head over to see us, you will enter at the Frontenac Secondary School parking lot (signage will be visible!) and give your order number. Then you drive through the classic cars and park where directed. Kingston Roller Derby will roll out your food, while K-Rock 105.7 provides the background soundtrack! We are asking all patrons to not leave their vehicles, but enjoy the sights and sounds!
