Camp Molly Kingston, an initiative between the City of Kingston, Kingston Fire and Rescue, and the National Indigenous Fire Safety Council, is now accepting applications.

Designed to introduce young women to the many different careers and skill sets in the fire service (dispatch, medical, investigations, suppression, auto extrication, forcible entry, public education, etc.), Camp Molly works to challenge, empower, and ultimately support campers in changing the way they see themselves, according to a release from the City of Kingston.

This initiative marks the first of three all-Indigenous camps across Canada in 2024 and is open to Indigenous female-identifying and non-binary youth aged 15 to 18 from across the province. Proof of status to the identified group will be required to participate, the City noted. Last year, Kingston Fire & Rescue host ‘Girls in Gear,’ a firefighting camp for girls modelled around Belleville’s Camp Molly initiative — and Camp Molly in Belleville was founded by Kingston Fire & Rescue Chief Monique Belair during her time as fire chief in Belleville.

Applications for Camp Molly Kingston are open now through Monday, Apr. 15, 2024. According to the release, the four-day camp is staffed entirely by volunteers and fire service professionals from across Ontario and will run from May 23 to 26, 2024.

The City said that eligible participants must also meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Be in good physical condition and have a positive attitude
  • Possess a valid provincial health card prior to the camp start date
  • Complete the online application form before the application deadline
  • Be committed to attending all Camp Molly activities and required dates
