BGC now offering weekend programs for children

Following the launch of expanded youth programs last week, BGC South East is now offering weekend programs for children aged four to 12 at their 1300 Bath Road location.
“It’s about offering safe spaces and quality programs for children and families, during the times they need. We recognize this is more than before and after-school care, and is especially needed beyond regular work times,” said Harold Parsons, Executive Director at BGC South East.
More than 200 childcare spots will be available on Saturdays and Sundays at the West End Community Centre.
“We have heard from families how the pandemic has changed the kind of support they need. Families increasingly require respite that supports changing work schedules,” Parsons noted. “Our programs also seek to support workers in specific industries, who regularly work on weekends and require reliable childcare services.”
“We thank the United Way of KFL&A and the City of Kingston for allowing us to expand supports to families in this new undertaking,” Parsons continued.
Families will be able to register per day up until noon on Friday, allowing for flexibility. Based on available space, families can also register upon arrival.
“Families can access programs every week or at times of need,” explained Jeff Helsby, Supervisor of the West End Community Centre at BGC South East. “It is for caregivers who need a few hours for work or errands, or when their child wants an engaging activity for the day.”
“It really is a thrilling time to see our programs grow and the West End Community Centre bustling,” Helsby said. “More than 20 community groups visit our Centre every week with over 200 hours a week of community usage. We keep all operations running in a COVID-19 safe way, after more than 16 months of non-stop frontline programs throughout the pandemic.”
“We want to build even more on being available when the community needs us,” Parsons added. “When schools are out, BGC is in; on weekdays, weeknights, and weekends. We appreciate the continued dedication of our staff, who have remained committed to providing the programs in need, in the Club way we all know and trust.”
