Best of 2009 (Part 4 of 5)

Thus far, Kingstonist’s Best of 2009 review has celebrated our most memorable posts, while unintentionally focusing on content concerning a variety of transportation elements.  From the arrival of Google Street View to a hypothetical pedestrian friendly downtown and a discussion concerning roundabouts, it’s time to look back at something a bit different in your rear view mirror.  This will only hurt for a second, if you’re lucky.

In late October, Kingstonians were lining up in no particular order to ensure that they were vaccinated against the dreaded H1N1, also known as swine flu.  Humorously referred to as porker potion, piggy poison, bacon brew, and other less fantastic forms of alliteration, the swine flu vaccine was in high demand.  Kingston, like some other communities, encountered problems while attempting to prioritize the vaccination of at risk groups, and then address the demand from the general population.  After the first week of Kingston’s one and only public vaccination clinic, complaints flooded in about the long lines, lack of prioritization for at risk individuals, and K&FLA Public Health’s general disorganization.  Tyffanie endured long lines and toughed it out to document the first come first – served fiasco, while our readers also weighed in to share their concerns about the matter.  Given the seriousness of H1N1, this post represents one of Kingstonist’s most memorable stories from 2009.
