At the movies in Kingston: December 13 edition

Welcome back to ‘At the movies in Kingston.’ The box office is about to go to the next level with this week’s newest releases.

Here is what’s new at the Kingston theatres for the week starting Friday, Dec. 13, 2019.

Landmark Cinemas

Jumanji: The Next Level brings the cast back from Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. This time the game has changed, and the characters are different. Forced into new worlds, led by Dwayne Johnson, the cast will have to brave new lands to rescue one of their own.

Black Christmas is about a group of sorority sisters who discover that the crazed killer that is harassing them is part of a conspiracy at their college.

Richard Jewell is the true-life story of security guard Richard Jewell and how, after he spotted an explosive device at the 1996 Olympics and evacuated the area to protect guests, was falsely accused of being the bomber. This film hopes to tell the true story of this forgotten hero.

Cineplex Odeon

The 10 a.m. Saturday morning family favourite is the recent animated film from Universal, Dr. Seuss’s The Grinch.

The Metropolitan Opera has a 12:00 noon encore of Manon on Saturday.

Sunday has an encore presentation of the Bolshoi Ballet’s The Nutcracker.

Jumanji: The Next Level also opens this weekend at Cineplex.

The Screening Room

Fantastic Fungi is a documentary about mushrooms and explores how truly remarkable these organisms are.

The Good Liar has Ian McKellen as a conman who thinks he found an easy target in the recently widowed Betty played by Helen Mirren. The charlatan’s swindle goes awry and escalates into a dangerous cat and mouse game with dire consequences.

The Two Popes is the story of how Pop Benedict and Pope Francis forged a future for the scandal-plagued Catholic Church. This is another Netflix film that is in search of Oscar glory.

Weekend Pick

Jumanji: The Next Level will be number one this weekend, but it’s reign at the box office will be short lived. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker arrives on the big screen next week. If you are hoping to see the conclusion to the Skywalker saga on opening weekend, you may want to get your tickets now. They are selling out fast.
