Assaulting mother, taking her car leads to multiple charges for Yarker man

A call regarding a family dispute in Prince Edward County (PEC) left police dealing with a handful of crimes on the 2023 Victoria Day holiday.

At approximately 9 p.m. on the holiday Monday, May 22, 2023, officers with the PEC Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call for service at a residence in Picton. There, a man had assaulted his mother and caused damages to her house before stealing her vehicle. The man fled the scene and was not present when police arrived, however, he later returned to the area, the OPP said in a press release the following day.

Police on scene learned that the man had been consuming alcohol prior to taking his mother’s vehicle.

After locating him, police arrested the 31-year-old from Yarker, who is now charged with:

  • Assault
  • Operation of a motor vehicle while impaired (drugs and alcohol)
  • Operation of a motor vehicle while impaired with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit
  • Taking a motor vehicle without consent
  • Mischief under $5,000
  • Failure to comply with a probation order

Police did not identify the accused man to protect the identity of the victim. The accused man was held for a bail hearing scheduled for today, Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at the Ontario Court of Justice.
