This year, Sustainable Kingston’s Spring Pitch-In event, in cooperation with the City of Kingston’s Solid Waste and Public Works departments and the Rotary Club of Kingston, will take place in the days following the Total Solar Eclipse Day on Monday, Apr. 8, 2024.

From April 9 to 14, the annual event aims to clean up any extra trash in local outdoor spaces after the crowds have cleared from the once-in-a-lifetime eclipse event.

“With large crowds expected, we anticipate there might be more garbage and trash in our parks than usual,” explained Sustainable Kingston COO Geoff Hendry. “That is in addition to the usual amount of trash that accumulates all winter.”

According to a release from Sustainable Kingston, earlier this month, the organization received a Community Outreach Grant from the Rotary Club of Kingston to reduce the carbon footprint of the event and incentivize student participation.

“We’re very grateful for the support of the Rotary Club of Kingston, as well as to the City of Kingston’s Public Works and Solid Waste departments,” Hendry stated. “This year, we hope to increase volunteer participation while engaging Kingston residents of all ages in a conversation about waste reduction.”

Individuals, schools, organizations, and businesses are invited to register online at: www.sustainablekingston.com/pitchin-2024-registration. A list of drop locations and a Pitch-In FAQ are also available at sustainablekingston.com.

According to the release, Pitch-In bags will be available to be picked up at the Kingston Area Recycling Centre (196 Lappan’s Lane.) Sustainable Kingston noted that participants who are unable to access Pitch-In bags may use their own.
