Almost Home is celebrating 30 years of helping families with sick children with serious, complex, or chronic medical problems who need long-term hospitalization at Kingston General Hospital or Hotel Dieu Hospital.

Everyone is invited to join Almost Home at Confederation Park on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2022 for a Family Fun Day. The event, put on with the support of McDonalds in Kingston and Gananoque, runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will be a day of children’s entertainment, activities, games, vendors and much more.

The event headliners are Splash’N Boots, a children’s music duo that has starred in over 100 episodes on Treehouse TV and Disney Junior. The main stage will also host live animal presentations by Little Ray’s Nature Centre, and appearances by local children’s performers, dance groups, and a variety of other entertainers.

“The Family Fun Day marks three decades of caring for families with sick kids in our city,” shared Sam MacLeod, Fund Development Manager for Almost Home. “Our charity wants to celebrate with the community that, over the years, has given families who stay at Almost Home the resources they need, so that they can focus on the recovery and care of a hospitalized child.”

Almost Home has eleven guest rooms where families of children can stay for just $10 a night, though no family is ever turned away because of an inability to pay, the organization stated. Each room is different, and they range in size from small one-parent rooms to large rooms that can accommodate an entire family.

These accommodations make it easier for parents to maintain bedside vigils, and children who can leave their hospital beds for a few hours have a home-like setting to visit with their families at Almost Home.

“Almost Home does not receive any government funding,” MacLeod added. “All our charity has, has been provided by donations and volunteerism in Kingston. The Family Fun Day is meant to thank the people of this city for the years of love and resources that have been provided to our charity.”
