Alleged arsonist in Portsmouth Avenue fire arrested

Kingston Police have arrested a local individual in connection with a fire which caused over $20,000 of damage to a property in the 700 block of Portsmouth Avenue last month.
On Tuesday, Apr. 25, 2023, Kingston Police along with Kingston Fire and Rescue responded to the residential fire which closed Portsmouth Avenue for a portion of the morning. According to a release from Kingston Police, their investigation later determined the cause of the fire was arson.
The fire appeared to originate at the corner of the house, at or near its gas meter. Kingston Police said they could not comment on the intentions or mindset of the suspect in having allegedly set the fire at that location.
“The damage to the residence as a result of the arson is estimated at $21,000,” Kingston Police said.
According to police, on Friday, Apr. 28, 2023, investigators arrested and charged an individual in relation to this incident.
Jerry Leeman, 29 years old of Kingston was arrested and charged with:
- Arson endangering life
- Possession of an incendiary device
Leeman was transported to Kingston Police headquarters and held for a bail hearing in relation to these charges.
Leeman was previously arrested by police in 2020 on possession of property obtained by crime, dangerous weapons and controlled substance charges after the OPP stopped an erratic vehicle on the 401 near Napanee.
