Best Shawarma in Kingston
Kingston has been lauded for our excellent cuisine. We have many wonderful, locally owned and sourced restaurants that cater to a variety of tastes. Finding a great steak or a perfectly topped wood-fired pizza is an easy task in ygk. When it comes to cultural diversity in our local fare, we still have room to grow. While our downtown boasts some excellent ethnic restaurants, we are also over-saturated when it comes to things like sushi, Thai and Cambodian food. We have seen an influx in Caribbean food as of late (which, based on our most recent poll on the issue, is one of the more sought after choices for Kingstonist readers). But, there is still much room for improvement.
One type of food that wasn’t covered in said poll is one of my personal favourites: Lebanese food. For me, it’s all about great hummous and falafel, kebbeh and fatoush. All of which I have yet to find in our town. Shawarma is also a favourite for many, whether it’s a sit down dinner with friends and family or an end of the night hangover helper, there are a few options in Kingston for this flavourful delight. Accordingly, this week we want to know:
Who Makes the Best Shawarma in Kingston?
- Famous King (36%, 73 Votes)
- Ali Baba Kabab (25%, 51 Votes)
- Mr. Donair (23%, 48 Votes)
- Limestone Kabob House (16%, 33 Votes)
Total Voters: 205

Four options isn’t terrible for a city our size but I think there is still room for a few more of these establishments to open up. While I like having these late night type places available to me as healthier options (certainly healthier than a fast food burger), I would also like to see a more up scale Lebanese restaurant take up shop in Kingston. I don’t mean “upscale” as in pricey, but just a place where we can sit and enjoy a meal that isn’t being served in a styrofoam container. Ali Baba Kabab on Princess St. is very close to achieving this. We reviewed it shortly after it opened in 2011 and were not overly impressed but based on its longevity, I will be going back very soon.
What do you think about the choices for shawarma and other Lebanese cuisine in Kingston? While we focused on specifically Lebanese restaurants today, there are many other establishments that sell falafel and the like. Are they pulling it off? Who is serving the best shawarma in Kingston?
Thanks to Julia Frost for today’s mouth watering pic.
There is not a single place in town that shaves the meat directly, as they do in Toronto and pretty much every other place in the world. This is a problem for shawarma restaurants, but also for Greek ones, as it’s darn near impossible to get a proper gyros in Kingston also. Is there a peculiar Kingston bylaw that prohibits meat from being shaved off of gyro/donair?
