‘Without Words’ – Early 1st Nations and European Barriers to Communication

April 14 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

In this continuing series of important talks sponsored by the Kingston Historical Society, Dr. Tabitha Renaud will speak about the barriers to communication experienced by First Peoples and the earliest European explorers.

For hundreds of years historians have glossed over how these groups of people communicated with one another during their first meetings. How did they convey information back and forth? How effective was this process?

This free Zoom talk returns to seminal episodes of “first encounters” to closely examine how people in reality communicated and how our broadening understanding of this earliest interaction between the settler society and our First Nations can change traditional historical interpretations and why it matters so vitally today.

Dr. Tabitha Renaud is a dynamic speaker who specializes in the early encounters between Indigenous peoples and European explorers in the Americas.

This talk is free. To register, contact Paul Van Nest at [email protected] for Zoom details.
