#ygkPlaylist: November 2015

This month’s #ygkPlaylist shines the spotlight on a small but popular stage for live music in downtown Kingston.  Musiikki Café officially opened their doors in the Summer of 2014, and since then they’ve become a prime destination for those looking to enjoy lively performances by local artists.  This month, we’re proud to share tunes from three recurring performers at Musiikki.  Hit play below on November’s #ygkPlaylist and get (re)acquainted with Chris Morris, Jon McLurg and Jeff J. Gaulton.  Like what you hear?  Be sure to catch them this month at Musiikki Café.

Chris Morris: this Kingston-native began performing at the age of 14 and has developed a repertoire of solo material rooted in folk and various acoustic-based styles.  His music blends together various complimentary genres including folk, blues, roots and alt-country.  Chris is a champion of local and unknown artists, having established a concert promotion business in 2002 that produced over 250 concerts over a 4 year span, which brought in the likes of Arcade Fire and k-Os.  In 2008, he became the host of the Kingston Folk Club, an open mic outlet that helped coax his return to regular performing and writing.  Find Chris on SoundCloud, Facebook and Twitter.

Jon McLurg: this solo act writes songs of that are inspired by truth and spirituality, which incorporate thoughts of reflection and melancholy.  Drawing on a rich folk tradition and a diverse background of musical experiences, Jon’s music is strikingly honest.  His listed influences range from Hank Williams to Pete Seeger, and from Leonard Cohen to Bob Dylan.  An accomplished songwriter, Jon’s song “Someone Thinks of You” won the American Songwriter magazine lyric contest.  Find Jon on SoundCloud and Twitter.

Jeff J Gaulton: with a musical resume that spans back to the mid-90’s, Jeff has been a member of bands such as AfterGlow, Boneyard Doggz and a trio of his namesake.  He started out performing mostly classic and hard rock, and has since gone on to hone his skills within the blues and roots genres.  Following the 2012 release of the Jeff J Gaulton Trio’s original EP entitled “Travel On”, Jeff emerged as a solo acoustic performer and singer/songwriter, which renewed his energy and passion as a musician.  Find Jeff on SoundCloud.

Every month, we comb Soundcloud looking for sounds that are unique to Kingston. We are constantly seeking out active musicians to show off to the local community and beyond. If you’re a musician who wants to be included in a future #ygkPlaylist, the first step is to get your original music up on Soundcloud and then follow us. We promise to follow you back, listen to your work and consider it for the monthly #ygkPlaylist.
