#ygkPlaylist: May 2017

The May 2017 playlist features 3 artists who will be performing at this Saturday’s 9th annual Homegrown Music Festival. These three musical acts represent a very small percentage of the number of fabulous, talented Kingston musicians who give up their time to perform at Homegrown each year. They also show the diversity and wide range of musical genres that are featured at the festival. Homegrown Live raises funds for Joe’s Musical Instrument Lending Library with a full day and night of live music all over downtown Kingston. Admission bracelets, which are available at the door of any participating venue, are only $10 and get you in everywhere all day long. Kids under 12 are free. So, have a look and a listen to this month’s playlist and while you’re at it, take a minute to look over our Guide to Homegrown 2017 and start planning your day.
Erika Lamon: Bilingual singer-songwriter Erika Lamon started her musical training with classical piano at the age of 4. In her teens she began the shift to writing pop music for a wider, more contemporary audience. In 2014, Erika was one of 7 candidates on TFO’s JAM 3, a television series that followed the candidates as they prepared to perform at les FrancoFolies de Montreal, the biggest francophone music festival in North America. She released her first EP, “Strangers Know” in 2016 and plays regularly with her band Les Soliloques. Erika will be playing at the Folk venue, Sir John A’s Public House at 8:45pm. Find Erika on Twitter and Bandcamp.

Fossils & Gospels: Listing bands such as Blind Melon, Nirvana, Alabama Shakes and Halfmoon Run as their inspiration, Fossils & Gospels has a varied and interesting sound. They work hard at creating enchanting melodies complimented by intimate harmonies but also offer up infectious grooves and unforgettable rock riffs. The band, made up of Mike Brown (lead vocals and guitar), Shannon Leah Evans (keyboards and vocals), Curt Sproule (guitar), Will Van Rhyn (bass synth and vocals) and Martyn Piper (percussion) plays the Rock Venue, BluMartini, at 6:55pm. Find them on Bandcamp.

Ian Wong: Ian Wong is a pianist, composer and music educator. He began writing music in 2014 and recently released his first album of original piano compositions, “Stories in Motion”, which he recorded with producer Matt Rogalsky at The Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts. Ian currently teaches piano privately and is a board member for The Kingston Arts Council. Catch Ian’s set at the Classical venue, Calvary United Church, at 4:15. Find Ian on Facebook and Twitter.

Every month, we comb Soundcloud looking for sounds that are unique to Kingston. We are constantly seeking out active musicians to show off to the local community and beyond. If you’re a musician who wants to be included in a future #ygkPlaylist, the first step is to get your original music up on Soundcloud and then follow us. We promise to follow you back, listen to your work and consider it for the monthly #ygkPlaylist.
