#ygkPlaylist: May 2016

This month’s #ygkPlaylist highlights a trio of local acts performing at the 2016 Homegrown Live Music Festival. Celebrating it’s eighth year, Homegrown Live is a one-day, multi-venue/genre festival that showcases Kingston-based musicians and bands. The festival also serves as a key fundraiser for the The Joe Chithalen Memorial Music Instrument Lending Library (Joe’s M.I.L.L.) by helping keep upwards of 800 instruments available for temporary loan.  With over 90 bands participating in this year’s festival, suffice it to say, this month’s ygkPlaylist barely scratches the surface of all the folks donating their time and talent to keep this beloved community resource going. Have a listen to the ygkPlaylist for May and be sure to come out and support your Homegrown.

Kingstown New Mississippi: Kingstown New Mississippi plays original blues and roots music, which is very laid back and danceable. The quartet is comprised of Earl “Street Corner” Coleman (lead guitar), DUKE (bass), Gary “Zap King” Lavallee (drums) and Roger Dorey (aka Reverend Freddie Vendetta, vocals , rhythm guitar).  You can catch them during Homegrown at the RCHA at 3pm.  Find Kingstown New Mississippi on Soundcloud.

The Paradise Eaters: Combining elements of rock, folk, jazz, reggae, dub and other genres, The Paradise Eaters are impossible to define.  The group consists of Frank Carone, Andy Hills, Rick Stratton and Phil Wright. They describe the outlet provided by music creation as follows: “our music is a meal that feeds our souls and drives us to contemplation and ecstasy. We write about journeys to unravel the threads of our existence”. Catch them during Homegrown at The Mansion’s Living Room at 11pm.  Find The Paradise Eaters on Soundcloud.

The Roosevelts: The Roosevelts are a high-energy electric blues band based, which comprised of five veteran musicians who found common ground in the blues. They eclectic group plays with style and authority, while their performances are bound to have you jumping, grooving, and dancing the blues away. You can catch The Roosevelts at Homegrown at the RHCA, where they’ll be rocking the last set of the evening at 11pm.  Find The Roosevelts on Soundcloud.

Every month, we comb Soundcloud looking for sounds that are unique to Kingston. We are constantly seeking out active musicians to show off to the local community and beyond. If you’re a musician who wants to be included in a future #ygkPlaylist, the first step is to get your original music up on Soundcloud and then follow us. We promise to follow you back, listen to your work and consider it for the monthly #ygkPlaylist.
