#ygkPlaylist: March 2015

For a city the size of Kingston, there is a staggering number of professional artists that live and work here. In particular, we have a vast, varied and thriving music scene. Musicians of all styles and genres have been able to find a place in Kingston. From rock, folk and blues to punk, hip hop and classical, there seems to be room for everyone.

Today marks the first of a new series entitled #ygkPlaylist. Every month, we’ll be combing Soundcloud for sounds that are unique to Kingston. We will be constantly seeking out active musicians to show off to the local community and beyond. If you’re a musician who wants to be included in a future #ygkPlaylist, the first step is to get your original music up on Soundcloud and then follow us. We promise to follow you back, listen to your work and consider it for the monthly #ygkPlaylist.

The first #ygkPlaylist kicks off with three well-known Kingston artists.  Rockers The Glorious Sons, folk-rock singer/songwriter Tom Savage and folk-rock singer/songwriter/jazz artist Jenica Rayne.  Have a listen to the playlist and be sure to click on the links and find out more about these hardworking musicians.

The Glorious Sons: The Glorious Sons first broke out after winning a contest in 2013 and haven’t slowed down since. They are currently on a US tour and will be returning home to head to the Junos as first time nominees for Rock Album of the Year for their latest release, The Union.  They have also been added to the line up for July’s Big Music Fest in Kitchener.  We’re sure they’ll find time for a hometown show in there somewhere too. Find them on: Facebook and Twitter.

Tom Savage: In 2012, singer/songwriter Tom Savage challenged himself to write a song a week for a whole year.  The result is the release of his first solo album in 8 years, History of a Common Man, which has received widespread acclaim.  Tom is no stranger to the road and has spent his fair share of time touring his music across Canada and the US.  In between tours and recording sessions (both solo and with his band The Foley Mountain Playboys), Tom can be found hosting an open mic every Wednesday at The Rose and Crown right here in ygk. Find him on: Facebook, and Twitter.

Jenica Rayne: Jenica Rayne is a singer/songwriter with a diverse musical background.  She is a prolific writer of folk, rock and blues with an output of 4 solo albums, and is also a member of several bands in the Kingston area including Calamity Janes, The Jenica Rayne Trio and Jenica and The RayneMakers.  In addition to her background in folk music, Jenica is a graduate of Vancouver Island University’s jazz program and can be regularly found performing in jazz ensembles.  She plays regularly in Picton and Gananoque as well as hometown gigs including occasional Friday afternoons at Monte’s and lunchtime shows at Confederation Basin in the summer months.  Jenica released her 4th studio album, Hit The Ground Running, this past October. Find her on: Facebook and Twitter.
