#ygkPlaylist: January 2017

It’s a new year and a great time to continue our #ygkPlaylist series with three new features. The first two, After The News and ghotitale, feature musicians who are veterans in the Kingston music scene but are going in different directions and taking on new projects. Sandals’ persona is a bit of a mystery but his music blends a mix of ambient yet poppy and chilled out tunes for your listening pleasure. See for yourself by pressing play on this month’s #ygkPlaylist, the first of 2017.

After The News: this band has only been playing together since 2015, but the musicians who form it are no strangers to the Kingston music scene. You will certainly recognize the core members from bands including Telefoto and Ianspotting and an impressive line up of guests who have played with The Gertrudes, Rueben DeGroot and The Kingston Symphony. While the holidays may be over, their rendition of The Little Drummer Boy is worth checking out. They released a limited edition 7″ record at the end of December which can be purchased by contacting the band. It will be available for download soon. Check them out on Facebook.

Chris Giguère: also known as twoghoti, is a long-time Kingston musician and, as he puts it, “the survivor of several bands”. He is a classically trained guitarist who is now writing solo material that straddles the fence of folk and rock. You can catch Chris playing live Saturday, January 8th at Musikki from 8pm-11pm. Find Chris on Facebook and Twitter.

Sandals: self-described as “bedroom pop/indie/lo-fi”, Sandals is Ben M., a Kingston electronic musician. Although his online footprint doesn’t tell us much about the musician, his output is frequent, interesting and followed by many listeners. You can find Sandals on Facebook, YouTube and Bandcamp.

Every month, we comb Soundcloud looking for sounds that are unique to Kingston. We are constantly seeking out active musicians to show off to the local community and beyond. If you’re a musician who wants to be included in a future #ygkPlaylist, the first step is to get your original music up on Soundcloud and then follow us. We promise to follow you back, listen to your work and consider it for the monthly #ygkPlaylist.
