#ygkPlaylist: January 2016

Our first #ygkPlaylist of 2016 kicks the year off with a trio of talented local musicians, some of whom you might know, and some of whom might be new to you.  That’s the beauty of our ongoing series: (re)discovering Kingston’s best and brightest bands and solo acts.  Hit play below on January’s #ygkPlaylist and enjoy original songs by Katie Beth, Debbie Fredericks and Nubs.

Katie Beth: an aspiring educator, accomplished musician/songwriter, and exciting radio personality heading CFRC’s Indie Wake Up Call.  Raised on the prairies, in the North End of Winnipeg, Katie developed a passion for music, art and education. She writes songs that encourage the audience to throw caution the wind and sing along, writing mostly for guitar but she also plays ukulele.  Find Katie Beth on SoundCloud and Twitter.

Debbie Fredericks: this Royal Conservatory trained educator is a member of the City’s Artist Teaching Roster within the Arts, Culture and Community Engagement Services Department.  She comes from a musical family, and she signed her first recording contract at the age of twenty as part of the 90’s dance group Europhoria.  In 2012, Debbie established a local coaching company geared towards supporting young singers, and has since released a handful of soulful singles. Find Debbie on Facebook and Twitter.

Nubs: driven by his love of music and committed to constant writing and gigging, Nubs is an emerging talent on the city’s small stage circuit. Armed with his trusty Yamaha APX550II acoustic and an electric guitar, he prides himself on writing the sorts of songs and playing the types of gigs that he has always dreamt of.  Nubs is fresh off the release of his debut album, Spend the Night, and showing no signs of stopping. Find him on Facebook and Twitter.

Every month, we comb Soundcloud looking for sounds that are unique to Kingston. We are constantly seeking out active musicians to show off to the local community and beyond. If you’re a musician who wants to be included in a future #ygkPlaylist, the first step is to get your original music up on Soundcloud and then follow us. We promise to follow you back, listen to your work and consider it for the monthly #ygkPlaylist.
