This month’s #ygkPlaylist includes alternative rockers Listen Up Kid, educator and children’s performer Gary Rasberry and folk duo Kyra and Tully. Have a listen to the playlist and be sure to click on the links and find out more about these hardworking Kingston musicians.
Listen Up Kid: Kingston quintet Listen Up Kid has been making a name for themselves, opening for big names including USS, The Pack A.D., Aaron Carter and The Johnstones. They describe their music as “Moody atmospheres, bright poppy payoffs, heavy at times.” The group released their debut album The Process of Progress and The Possible Side Effects in November 2014. While they are focusing their efforts on playing in others cities as much as they can, they can frequently be heard in Kingston opening for touring acts at venues such as The Mansion. Find them on: Facebook and Twitter.
Gary Rasberry: Gary Rasberry has a PhD in education and has worked as a teacher, songwriter, poet and children’s performer for over 20 years. His 2013 album, What’s The Big Idea?!, was nominated for a Juno, putting him in the company of the likes of Fred Penner and Queen’s graduates Splash’N Boots. His latest album, The Very Next Day, was released in the fall of 2014 and features Toronto’s Woodshed Orchestra. Find him on: Facebook and YouTube.
Kyra and Tully: Journey Home is the fourth album from Kyra and Tully and it has been a long time coming. It took nearly three years to write and record this highly anticipated EP, and it has been worth the wait. The album, set for release on this month, includes performances from over twenty Kingston artists and explores new directions for the folk duo. The thick textures, rockin’ drum beats and electric guitar licks are a bit of a departure from their usual lighter, folky sound, but still manages to have a sincerity and intimacy that we’ve come to expect from them. Journey Home will be released on April 18th at Chalmers United Church, with headliner Matthew Barber. Find them on: Facebook and Twitter.
Every month, we comb Soundcloud looking for sounds that are unique to Kingston. We are constantly seeking out active musicians to show off to the local community and beyond. If you’re a musician who wants to be included in a future #ygkPlaylist, the first step is to get your original music up on Soundcloud and then follow us. We promise to follow you back, listen to your work and consider it for the monthly #ygkPlaylist.
