Top Five Things to See and Do in Spring 2012
As we begin to see blossoming tulips and the other tell-tale sights and sounds of Spring, we’ve also noticed quite an impressive list of activities piling up on our community events calendar. Selecting which to feature in our seasonal top 5 is almost as difficult as choosing which ones to attend. Challenging as it may be, we’ve handpicked the most accessible, affordable and anticipated events from this coming quarter. Enjoy!
Public Market(s), Spring 2012: Market Square is a focal point for many Kingstonians during the coming seasons, as vendors offer up everything from local produce to maple syrup, baked goods and even fresh flowers. In addition to the bustling downtown market, we’re also anticipating a lot great things via an additional public market that’s being trialled at the Memorial Centre. What a great resource for our friends in Williamsville!
Homegrown Live, 12 May 2012: the 3rd annual Homegrown Live music festival features a long list of notable talent who will take the stage at various venues to help raise money for the Joe Chithalen Memorial Musical Instrument Lending Library (Joe’s M.I.L.L.), and collect food donations for the Partners in Mission Foodbank. For the second year in a row, Kingstonist is a proud sponsor of Homegrown Live. See you there.
Art After Dark, 24 May 2012: a bi-annual event that commenced in the Fall of ’08, Art After Dark showcases local and imported talent in over a dozen of our downtown’s finest galleries. Stroll from one gallery to the next, from dusk until 10pm, and enjoy visual art, poetry, drama, dance and more. Art After Dark is a fantastic way to acquaint yourself with local galleries and artists, and generate conversation regarding the works that are presented.
Kingston Pride, 1 to 16 June 2012: two weeks of inclusive events geared towards celebrating and bringing together members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community. Events include dance parties, art displays, picnics and of course, the increasingly popular Pride Parade, which makes it’s way down Princess Street and other parts of the downtown.
War of 1812 Bicentennial Celebrations, 28 June to 1 July 2012: in an effort to commemorate the War of 1812 and celebrate 200 years of friendship, Fort Henry and the 1812 Bicentennial Alliance will reenact The Flight of the Royal George along Kingston’s waterfront. This event will feature multiple tall ships, gunboats and land forces, taking part in a carefully orchestrated display of military history.
