With the resumption of full-time in-person learning at area high schools comes the return of a popular rite of passage for many students, the school musical.

This December, three area high schools are producing full-scale musicals for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic. For the students involved, these productions are often significant milestones in their high-school careers, creating enriching and memorable experiences through the power of the performing arts.

To mark the return of these very special productions, Kingstonist has put together a listing of the high school musicals taking place this fall semester. Each of these shows will take the stage for just a few short days, so pay close attention to the scheduling details to get your tickets while you still can and end 2022 on a high note!

Loyalist Collegiate and Vocational Institute (LCVI): Mamma Mia!

For its Fall 2022 production, LCVI is turning to ABBA’s popular jukebox musical Mama Mia! The show, which first opened in London’s West End in 1999, has been a hit for decades, spawning a 2008 film adaptation and a 2018 movie sequel. With recognizable songs like ‘Dancing Queen,’ ‘Take a Chance on Me,’ and ‘SOS,’ Mamma Mia! is sure to be a hit amongst parents and guardians. However, the show’s script has been modified slightly for young performers, ensuring the content is appropriate and entertaining for all ages.

LCVI’s production of Mamma Mia! runs December 1 to 3, 2022. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the show starting at 7:00 p.m. Tickets cost $15 and can be purchased at the door.

This December, Holy Cross will be performing the classic hit-musical Grease for the first time in the school’s history. With themes like friendship, romance, and teenage angst, audiences young and old will be sure to connect to the timeless love story at the heart of the production. Based on the hit 1978 film, Grease has gone on to become one of the world’s most famous musicals. With hit songs like ‘Summer Nights,’ ‘Grease Lightning,’ and ‘Beauty School Dropout,’ audiences will be in for an enjoyable and entertaining night out.

Grease opens on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2022, and runs until December 10. Showtimes are at 7:00 p.m., with an additional matinee scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on December 10. While online tickets sold out rather quickly, there will be seats available at the door for performances on December 9 and 10.

Regiopolis Notre Dame: The Addams Family

Regi will be presenting the beloved hit The Addams Family as its 2022 fall term production. The show, which premiered on broadway over 10 years ago, presents a brand-new original story for the fictional family. Fans of the TV show and the popular 90s movie will enjoy Regi’s fresh take on the recognizable franchise. However, this family-friendly musical is sure to resonate with all audiences.

The Addams Family runs December 15 to 17, 2022, with performances set for 7:00 p.m. There is also a special afternoon presentation scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on December 17. Tickets can be purchased online.

It is important to acknowledge the incredible amount of work it takes to make these productions a reality. While the cast on stage often gets the loudest applause, without the contributions of musicians, tech crew, stage managers, costume designers, painters, builders conductors, directors, parent volunteers, and more, these musicals would not be possible.

Even though there are just three productions listed in this article, it should be noted that additional plays and musicals are likely to take place throughout the spring semester. Several Kingston area schools have already lined up productions for next semester. Stay tuned to Kingstonist in the months ahead for a similar article on Spring 2023 performances.
