At the movies in Kingston: April 12 edition
Welcome back to ‘At the movies in Kingston’. This week you have a choice of cheering on a demonic hero battling to save the world, the latest tale from stop-motion animation masters Laika Studios, or watch a penguin named Steve live his life.
Here’s what is new at the Kingston theatres for the week starting Friday, Apr. 12, 2019.
Landmark Cinemas:
Hellboy is back. The rebooting of this popular comic series stars actor David Harbour as the titular character. This time, Hellboy is looking to save the world from an evil sorceress out for revenge.
Little is the story of a tech mogul named Jordan Sanders who wakes up on the morning of an important presentation as her thirteen-year-old self. Having to grow up again, Jordan with her assistant April gains a new appreciation for life, and how to treat people.
Mia and the White Lion is about a young girl that moves to Africa and befriends a young lion cub.
Missing Link is the latest film from Laika Studios. At eight feet tall, over 600 pounds and covered in hair, Mr. Link is supposedly the missing link in the evolution of apes to humans. Tired of living a lonely life, Mr. Link hires famed explorer Sir Lionel Frost to help him find his long-lost relatives in the fabled valley of Shangri-La
Starting Wednesday, Apr. 17, Penguins from Disneynature is the story about a penguin named Steve, who joins millions of other penguins as they build a nest, find that special partner for life, and raise a family. This documentary is only seventy-six minutes long and is targeted for the whole family.

Cineplex Odeon:
After is the story of a young girl who falls for a guy with a secret. Naturally, this secret is deep and dark and will propel the couple on a rocky relationship. After is based on the Anna Todd novel of the same name.
Saturday has the Stratford Festival return to the screen for the 12:55 pm showing of The Tempest.
The Saturday morning 10 am Family Favourites is The Secret Life of Pets. Audiences will laugh as Max and Duke battle for the affection of their owner in this animated tale.
Playing on Wednesday, Apr. 17, Howl’s Moving Castle is the story of a timid young woman who is cursed by a witch. Looking to break the curse the young woman must seek out an insecure wizard who resides in a walking castle.

The Screening Room:
Hotel Mumbai recounts the 2008 terrorist siege of the Taj Hotel in Mumbai, India. Watch as the movie tells the tale of the real people who tried to save as many people possible from the terrorist threat.
The Aftermath is set in 1946 and has the main character Rachael Morgan arrive in the ruined city of Hamburg, Germany. Reuniting with her husband, tasked with rebuilding the decimated German city, the couple ends up sharing a home with a German widower and his troubled daughter.
The Woman Who Loved Giraffes is based on the 1956 study of Canadian scientist Anne Dagg. The first scientist to study animal behaviour on the continent in the wild, Anne returns home to Canada and faces insurmountable odds at getting her research published.
The Cinematica Classic for this month is a double feature of Jackie Chan’s two early works, Police Story, and Police Story 2. Come and marvel at the grace, skill, and talent that Chan displays on the screen. These two films helped establish Jackie Chan as a global star.

Weekend Pick:
Fans of Hellboy will flock to the theatres to see their favourite character back on the screen. Ron Perlman will always be remembered for his turn in the title role, and the lack of Perlman may affect the success of this reboot of the series. I would have expected a larger media campaign for this relaunch.
Penguins would be a fun film to take the whole family too. The visuals alone would be worth seeing on the big screen.
