The Art of Holding On

The Art of Holding On, Verna Vowles, Kingston, OntarioMaggie Naylor is a photojournalism student at Loyalist College who recently unveiled a short titled ‘The Art of Holding On’ (embedding disabled – view it here), which offers a glimpse into the life on renowned local visual artist Verna Vowles.  Verna began painting with oils in the 1950s, and later went onto master painting with watercolours and liquid acrylics.  A Bachelor of Fine Arts graduate from Concordia University, Verna’s work is often described as experimental or abstract.  As demonstrated in the short, this 95 year-young artist employs a wet fluid acrylic-water mixture, which is liberally yet carefully brushed onto her canvasses to create a dramatic effect.  Hit play to hear Verna’s unique perspective on life-long creativity, and if you want to see more, check out her online portfolio/gallery here.
