Movies in the Square 2009

Movies in the Square, KingstonWith the terrible Winter and cool Spring we’ve had, I think most of us are really looking forward to the hazy days of Summer.  Whether you plan on hitting up the local golf course, taking in a tour at Ft. Henry, or simply hopping on your bike, there no shortage of things to see and do around the Limestone City.  One of our new favorite evening past times is hitting up the local drive-in, which we’ve already done on two separate occasions since it opened last month.  That said, in case your not a fan of late nights, or new blockbuster franchises, perhaps you’d prefer a night of Movies in the Square.

The City of Kingston has just announced their latest schedule of upcoming movies in our picturesque Market Square.  Similar to last year’s lineup, there are a good selection of family friendly flicks, blockbusters, and classics that span the past few decades.  A complete rundown is as follows:

  • 25 June:  Hook
  • 2 July:  The Goonies
  • 16 July:  Mrs Doubtfire
  • 23 July:  Singin’ in the Rain
  • 30 July:  My Girl
  • 6 August:  Rocky
  • 13 August:  Contact
  • 20 August:  Homeward Bound – The Incredible Journey
  • 27 August:  The Aristocats
  • 3 September:  A League of Their Own

As I’ve said, it’s a pretty good mix, however I’d love it if the City involved the public in the film selection process.  In the future, they should open up a few dates, take nominations, and poll people online.  Off the top of my head, a few of my nominations would be:  Dazed and Confused, Labyrinth, Die Hard, and Indiana Jones.    What sort of movies would you like to see in the Square? Are any of the above mentioned features going to coax you out to see a (free) movie this Summer?

Thanks to jmacphoto.com for the delicious, buttery popcorn photo.

  • I think I should point out on August 27th The AristoCATs is playing. Not The AristoCRATs. Two very different movies!

  • Maybe it’s “The AristoCATS” and not “The Aristocrats”? I’d be kind of impressed, though, if it WAS “The Aristocrats”!

  • Oooops! I managed to get it right on the calendar, but for some reason I took the advice of spell check before publishing this post. Yeah, a screening of the Aristocrats would definitely have a different, non-family friendly vibe to it.

  • Just noticed that last year’s schedule also included Rocky? Kind of weird that they’d show the same movie two years in a row? Was it canceled last year due to inclement weather?

  • I agree. I think that the public should be polled. The only movie I might be interested in would be Singin’ in the Rain. Of course, it’s difficult to please everyone, however the list for the most part seems to be quite insipid. Imagine the fun of a movie like North by Northwest or a classic summer blockbuster like the Original Star Wars or Jaws? A few years back they did Casablanca, Butch Cassiday and the Sundance Kid, The Pink Panter w/Peter Sellers and Raiders of the Lost Ark—these were great fun!

Sounds to me like a great opportunity to pursue other options within the community.

  • @benderoni The folks behind Movies in the Square contacted us to advise that the public was in fact polled, however this was done via a local radio station. So, unless you listen to that particular station, chances are you didn’t have a chance to submit films, or vote. Hopefully next year they can make the process a bit more accessible, move the process online, and advertise the whole thing.
