#ygkChallenge: Photo Call

greatest photo challengeWelcome to Kingstonist’s weekly challenge, dare, resolution or whatever you prefer to call it. Each week we establish a new and ambitious community goal, encouraging our readers, followers, friends and families to step out of their comfort zones and do something great, and hopefully a little out of the ordinary. Consider this your official and personal invitation to join us in completing a small but meaningful achievement. By taking part in this community-wide initiative, we hope to make Kingston a slightly better place to live, work and play. And of course, we also hope that you will feel proud of your contribution and achievement.

This week’s challenge encourages you to:

Upload your best photos to Kingstonist’s Flickr group. Twice a year, Kingstonist’s Greatest Photo Contest challenges local shutterbugs to go frame to frame during a week-long battle where our readers decide the outcome. If you would like your photo to be considered for our upcoming Greatest Photo Contest, December 2012 edition, head on over to Kingstonist’s Flickr group and upload your best photos that have been taken in and around Kingston. It doesn’t matter if they were snapped today or 10 years ago, so long as they are truly local, and honestly yours. Hopeful contestants will have until midnight on Saturday, December the 1st to submit entries until their heart’s content. From there, Kingstonist’s select jury will comb through the submissions we’ve received since our last Greatest Photo Contest and come away with a small group of final contestants. Last but not least comes the fun part, where we’ll once again turn to our readers and friends to vote for their favourite photos from December 3rd until the 16th. With prizes and bragging rights on the line, we hope you’ll join in the fun and take part.

Sign up and commit to completing this week’s challenge by commenting below with an “I’m in“, “challenge accepted“, “en garde” or something along those lines. Further, help us spread the word via Twitter and Facebook by sharing the link and encouraging the participation of your friends and family. By joining together in our weekly challenge, we hope to accomplish big and positive things for our community.

Thanks to Cyrus II for the photo associated with this week’s #ygk challenge.

  • Why would anyone submit photos when the only photos used on your site are ones you poach from flickr?

    • Ted, many of the photos we use are from our flickr pool and when we can't find what we're looking for there, we use photos from Creative Commons only and always credit the photographer. As a volunteer run website, we don't always have the time or resources to take our own photos (but we do when we can). People submit photos to our contest because it's a great way to have their photography seen and a really nice way to celebrate Kingston.

    • It's true that don't always use locally sourced photos, but then again some of our stories call for really specific/obscure images that simply cannot be found in our pool. The remainder of the time we try to use what our friends have generously shared with us.
