Everything You Need to Know About Hip Day
The Tragically Hip will perform at the K-Rock Centre on August 20, 2016 beginning at 8:30 p.m. CBC will livestream the concert across Canada and the City of Kingston – with partners, Kingston Accommodation Partners and the Great Waterway – are excited to be hosting the livestream at Springer Market Square. The concert will also be showing in most Kingston bars.
The Kingston Public Market will close at 2 p.m. so set-up for the live-stream can get underway.
Set-up should be complete by 4 p.m. The area will feature:
- Large LED screen with concert-quality sound
- Official concert merchandise
- Food vendors
- Selfie and signing walls

The Tragically Hip will not be making an appearance at Springer Market Square before or after the concert.
At the event, please help to keep the city clean. Please take your garbage and recycling with you when you leave. (Pack in/Pack out.)

How to get to Springer Market Square:
- Be active – Cycling and walking are great options if you live within a few kilometres of the Square.
- Take transit – Public transit will be free all day and will offer additional 15 minute express service on all express routes from 4 to 7 p.m. and from 11 p.m. to 2:30 a.m.
- Park and Ride – There will be a shuttle service offered from St. Lawrence College, 100 Portsmouth Ave., from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m.
- Carpool – If you are driving downtown please consider carpooling with your friends as parking will be limited.
- Taxi – Taxi stands will be located on Wellington Street between Queen and Barrack streets and on Wellington Street between Johnson and William streets.
- Accessible Parking – Please look at the site map for accessible parking and drop-off locations close to the Square.
Transit
- All Kingston Transit routes will be free. Additional 15-minute express service will be offered on all express routes from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and from 11 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Please see the route maps and schedule for the additional 15-minute express service.
- All other Kingston Transit routes will operate on a regular Saturday schedule. Information about other Kingston Transit routes can be found here www.kingstontransit.ca.

Park-and-ride
A park-and-ride service will be offered from St. Lawrence College starting at 4 p.m. The shuttle will pick-up and drop-off at the Kingston Transit transfer point at the college and on King Street at the base of City Park.
Wolfe Island ferry
Wolfe Island ferry users may experience delays beginning at 6 a.m. due to changes in traffic flow. Please consider walking onto the ferry rather than driving, as many streets in downtown Kingston will be closed and parking will be extremely limited. When exiting the ferry terminal from the ferry, please pay close attention to pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. You will only be able to turn onto Ontario Street from the terminal exit.
For those residents and visitors to Kingston, please note that the Wolfe Island Ferry Terminal is not for public parking. The lot is for ferry users only. Please park in City of Kingston public parking lots.
Road closures and parking restrictions
There will be a number of road closures in effect beginning on Thursday to allow for event set-up for both the livestream and the Poker Run. Roads will be reopened as soon as safely possible after the events.

- Brock St. (Ontario to King) – August 20 at 6 a.m.
- Brock St. (King to Wellington) – August 20 at 2 p.m.
- Clarence St. (Bagot to King) – August 20 at 6 a.m.
- King St. (Clarence to Queen) – August 20 at 2 p.m.
- King St (Place D’Armes to Barrack St.) – August 18 at 6 a.m. to August 21
- Market St. – August 19 at 6 a.m. to August 21
- Ontario St. (Brock to Clarence) – August 19 at 12 p.m. to August 21, 12 p.m.
- Ontario St. (Clarence to Johnson) – August 19 at 12 p.m. to August 21, 12 p.m.
- Ontario St. (Queen to Brock) – August 20 at 6 a.m – Local traffic only
- Princess St. (Wellington to Ontario) – August 20 at 2 p.m.
- The Tragically Hip Way – August 19 at 12 p.m.
Parking
Parking will be restricted on all closed streets, except for the accessible spaces that are indicated on the site map, which is coming soon. These streets will have signs to indicate the parking restrictions on these days and vehicle owners risk being towed if they park within the restricted areas.
The following parking restrictions are being put into place for August 20th:
- King Street E between Clarence Street and Place D’Armes
- Princess Street between Wellington Street and Ontario
- Queen Street between Wellington Street and Ontario
- Clarence Street between Bagot Street and King Street E
- Brock Street between Wellington Street and Ontario
- Market Street
- Ontario Street between Clarence Street and Brock
- Barrack Street and The Tragically Hip Way between Wellington and Ontario
- Wellington Street between Queen Street and Barrack
- Wellington Street between William Street and Johnson
Accessible Parking will be available on:
King Street E between Johnson Street and Clarence
King Street E between Queen and the Tragically Hip Way
Accessible pick-up and drop-off area will be located on Clarence Street between King Street E and Ontario Street.
How to plan for the event
A few tips to make your day more enjoyable
- Plan your trip. Car pool, walk or take advantage of free transit.
- Plan for the weather. Pack rain gear or sunhat, sunscreen.
- With large crowds, you can expect delays. Please be patient.
- Please do not bring chairs or umbrellas. These items will limit the number of people who can experience this celebration together.
- Food vendors will be onsite selling various items but you may wish to bring snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. Utilities Kingston will have both water buggies onsite so you can refill your water bottle.
- Navigating through the area with a stroller and/or large bags may be difficult.
- Springer Market Square is a smoke-free venue.
- Bags may be searched for prohibited or restricted items such as alcohol, weapons, possible projectiles and large and/or intrusive items
- Help to keep the city clean. Please bring your garbage and recycling back home. (Pack in/Pack out.)
Accessibility
- There will be an accessible area and chairs will be provided.
- There will be accessible washrooms on site.
- There will be accessible parking nearby as well as a drop-off point next to the Square.
